New Bern Firefighters battled one of the biggest fires in the city since 1990 on Friday Night.
For close to six hours last night, crews from several departments in the county arrived to Smitty's Welding Shop on Queen Street. It didn't take long for the flames to consume a church and garage in the same structure.
Saturday, an empty burned out hull of a building is left. The owners, Beverly and Asa Dail spent the day cleaning out the back of the building ,which was used for storage. Some of their personnel belongings were inside, and now badly to irreparably damaged.
The city condemned the building Saturday and the Dails say after 31 years of ownership, it will be torn down next week.
Beside the welding shop, The Blessed Hope Church lost their place of worship in the fire. Dail says Faith Methodist On Highway 17 has offered their facility to their parishioners.
