Freedom is a gift from those that fought and died for this country.
That was the message at a groundbreaking ceremony held Thursday morning at the Greenville Town Common for a new monument to honor the 10,000 veterans and fallen service members of Pitt County.
The concept for the fallen soldier memorial was that of Dawn Cash, wife of fallen National Guard soldier Captain Chris Cash, a graduate of East Carolina University. The fallen soldier monument will be built along side the war memorial at the Greenville Town Common.
The monument will be dedicated May 30. The approximate cost was $5,000, raised through private donations.
