Attorney Bill Graham today formally announced his candidacy for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
Graham made the announcement this morning to a rally of about 100 supporters in his hometown of Dunn. He says he never planned on running for governor until he started his anti-gas tax effort last year.
Graham raised his profile by complaining about high taxes and illegal immigration. He wants to lower taxes and improve schools and roads.
Graham has never run for elected office. He spent more than two million dollars of his money to bankroll a group he started called North Carolina Conservatives United.
He spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on radio and television commercials in 2006, urging citizens to roll back a nearly three-cent automatic increase in the gasoline tax.
