Reverend Jerry Falwell has died.
An official at Liberty University says Falwell was found unconscious in his office at the Virginia college earlier today. The official said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but that Falwell "has a history of heart challenges." He added that Falwell seemed "fine" at breakfast this morning.
Falwell arrived at Lynchburg General Hospital around noon. About an hour and a half later, university officials confirmed he had died. Falwell was 73.
He had survived two serious health scares in early 2005. He was
hospitalized for two weeks with what was described as a viral
infection. He was hospitalized again a few weeks later after going
into respiratory arrest.
The TV evangelist, who founded the Moral Majority, became the
face of the religious right in the 1980s. He later founded the
conservative Liberty University and served as its president.
