The main bridge into downtown New Bern will be closed starting Tuesday afternoon. The Department of Transportation will close the aging Alfred Cunningham drawbridge, which takes drivers into downtown New Bern, to build a new bridge to the tune of 39-million dollars. DOT officials say the actual demolition of the old bridge won't begin until at least July. Drivers heading East on U.S. 70 will be told to exit at Doctor Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and turn left toward downtown. Meantime, drivers headed West on U.S. 70 will exit at Pembroke road. The entire project is expected to take over two years, with the new bridge scheduled to open in November of 2009, in time for New Bern's 300th birthday celebration in 2010.
