Wachovia Wants A Million New Checking Accounts This Year

Wachovia general bank President Ben Jenkins says the bank plans to open one million new checking accounts this year.

Jenkins says the company will focus on customer service to build new accounts.

He says loyal customers buy more, stay with a bank longer and are much more aggressive in the recommending their bank to friends and associates.

Wachovia has been ranked Number One for five consecutive years in the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

The Charlotte bank is the nation's fourth-largest bank, based on assets. It opened 555-thousand new checking accounts last year.

The company generated 270-thousand new checking accounts in the first three months of this year, that's up 44 percent from the first quarter last year.
