Sheriff's investigators in Cumberland County have handled just one homicide investigation this year, so they're taking a fresh look at the 85 unsolved murders in the department's cold case file.
They've closed one case, charging three men in February with the 1997 slaying of a Fort Bragg soldier found shot to death in his car.
Now, they've found a previously unknown connection between a pair of shooting victims killed the same year. When re-interviewing witnesses about the death of Robert Jacobs Junior, police found he had a family connection to Deborah Minshew Jones. She had recently talked with police about his death when she was killed.
Police have sent several pieces of evidence from Jacobs' murder for fingerprint and D-N-A testing, which are more extensive now than in 1997.
