A Coast Guard cutter and aircraft from several military bases searched Saturday for four sailors and their sailboat last heard from at the beginning of the week.
The sailboat "Flying Colours" sent an emergency signal early Monday during a severe storm off the North Carolina coast. The last signal was about 7 a.m. Monday.
So far, the search has covered more than 173-thousand square miles of sea, an area larger than California.
Aircraft from the Coast Guard base at Elizabeth City were joined Saturday by a jet from Cape Cod's Coast Guard Air Station and Navy search plane from Florida and six C-130s from two Air Force bases and Air National Guard units in North Carolina, Rhode Island, New York and Georgia.
