House Debates Budget

Debate is under way in the House on the
state budget.
Discussion comes after the House's full budget-writing panel
agreed on Wednesday to remove several provisions from its 20
billion-dollar spending plan.
The House Appropriations Committee eliminated nearly 20
million dollars in projects that critics say amounted to "pork
barrel" spending that would benefit committee leaders.
The revised bill went to the full House for consideration.
Cuts include projects that had a local angle or university
building plans outside preferences of the U-N-C Board of Governors.
In recent years, leaders in the General Assembly leaders have
been criticized for funding too many projects that emphasize local
initiatives or appear to favor one legislator.
House Speaker Joe Hackney says he wants money spent this year on
projects only with a statewide or regional focus.
