One of those boys is a 4th grader from Washington. Ten year old Gerhig Matthews is a young boy who will forever be thankful to Wert for saving his life. Matthews says Wert died a hero, swimming out into the treacherous waters off Atlantic Beach Saturday afternoon, trying to help him and his friends. Gerhig says all of a sudden he and his two friends couldn't touch anymore, and started gasping for air, and screaming for help. That's when Master Sergeant Wert ran into the water, a complete stranger that ultimately died a hero. We do know one twelve year old boy with Gehrig was from Membane in Alamance County.
