North Carolina has joined a volunteer climate registry for reporting emissions.
Climate Registry is a nonprofit group that lets businesses and industry voluntarily report their emissions so states can better track their progress in reducing the releases.
The registry would enable businesses to claim credit for their reductions if the federal government ever caps carbon dioxide emissions.
Burning fossil fuels such as coal or gasoline releases carbon dioxide. Many experts believe these are the most common gases causing the planet to warm up.
South Carolina has also joined the registry, which now includes around 30 states.
