Greenville firefighters say a mother showed up at the main fire station on South Greene street Monday night, and turned over her newborn. Fire officials believe it is the first time someone in Greenville has taken advantage of the state's Safe Surrender law. That's where an overwhelmed mother can surrender her newborn to a responsible adult and walk away. The baby will then be placed in a loving home. Under the law, an infant up to 7 days old may be surrendered to any responsible adult. The mother and infant were sent to Pitt Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation. The infant will be turned over to social service authorities upon release from the hospital.
