A law that was supposed to help train more teachers isn't working.
That's the view from community college officials, who say they want the 2005 law revised.
North Carolina lawmakers two years ago gave two-year schools permission to offer classes to would-be teachers who didN'T have a degree in education.
The so-called "lateral-entry certificates" are offered at about a third of the state's 58 community colleges.
But a majority of them doN'T have any students enrolled in the program.
Officials say the problem is that admission requirements are too stringent. To enroll, these students must have held a bachelor's degree for at least five years and already be working for a school district.
The state House last month voted to relax some requirements. The legislation now goes to the Senate.
