The North Carolina Justice Center has released statistics on the number of people in poverty in our state, and the results are staggering. The data show 18 counties in North Carolina have poverty levels above 20 percent. Nine of those counties are in Eastern Carolina.

Here's a list of those counties in Eastern Carolina with a poverty level above 20 percent:
Lenoir: 25.7%
Martin: 24.6%
Hertford: 24.6%
Halifax: 23.8%
Edgecombe: 22.9%
Wilson:22.7%
Northampton: 22.4%
Pitt: 22.2%
Duplin: 21.5%

The overall state poverty rate is 14.6 percent.

These statistics, for the year 2008, could be considered conservative, since unemployment rates are higher now than they were last year.

Latinos make up the largest ethnic group living in poverty at 28.2 percent, which is a rate three times as high as whites. The share of African Americans living in poverty in North Carolina is 24.3 percent.

There is a reason people have fought against the OLF. This was NOT going to bring a large amount of jobs to NC. The planes would just touch down on the landing field and take back off. They would not be living here or even patronizing eating places. The government does not pay county taxes. The land that would be taken for this landing field is now earning tax dollars. If the govenment takes it - no tax dollars. Could somebody tell me just what benefit this would be to NC? No money - just noise & family land being taken by the govenment at below market value. That doesn't sound like a good deal to me! Do you have land you want to give to them at pennies on the dollar? I think not!

Bouy 9, if you really believe this communistic lifestyle you proclaim, listen to what LEW posted. It has never worked, ever. It has failed everytime. I read the posts and understand wanting to help the poor, but, do you actually do that or procrastinate it or think "others" should do it. Its your job end of sentence. Posting all that feel good, this time of the year says you don't take care of those in your life who are less able, poor or dissabled. Its your job man. The government should not take that responsibility, its not their place. Some of you don't get it, you can be the president of the United States if you only try. It was just proven. Not everybody is born with a silver spoon, they take minimum wage jobs, go to school, get jobs that pay better and then "do a good job with the best of you ability". Sorry, this is what this nation was founded on and if you do not like it, move. Now Bouy 9, go beyond the waves and sink yourself.
