Federal agents are investigating whether there should be charges brought in Tuesday's dynamite discovery in Pitt County.

Authorities say they found seven sticks of dynamite in the refrigerator of a townhome on Vineyard Drive.

Police evacuated the surrounding area as the Cherry Point Bomb Squad came in and safely burned the explosives.

State troopers went to William Brooks' home to arrest him on outstanding warrants from a drunk driving arrest. They discovered the dynamite after first discovering illegal pain killers and marijuana.

Earl Woodham, spokesman for the ATF office in Charlotte says local agents are looking to see if there were any violations of the federal explosive laws.

Brooks' roommate told WITN that the explosives belong to man's father and that the dynamite is legal.

Greenville Fire and Rescue officials say seven sticks of dynamite were found in the refrigerator of a Pitt County home.

It happened Tuesday at a townhome complex on Vineyard Drive in Winterville.

The Cherry Point Bomb Squad took the dynamite to a field to burn it, without exploding it.

No one has been hurt.

Forlines Road was shut down between Red Forbes Road and Frog Level Road for several hours Tuesday afternoon. That road reopened shortly before 5:00 p.m. and residents were allowed to return.

State troopers say they went to the townhome to serve DWI warrants on William Brooks.

They say as they were serving the warrant they discovered Brooks had illegal pain killers in his possession and they found marijuana in the home.

Troopers tell us they also found multiple rifles in the home, which they are checking to see if those weapons are legal or not.

Also during search, troopers found seven sticks of dynamite. Brooks has been served with four warrants on DWI case, and he is charged with several drug related offenses.

Authorities say they are still investigating whether the 21-year-old Brooks will face any charges with the dynamite. Greenville Fire-Rescue says Brooks does demolition work of some type.

The Cherry Point Bomb Squad was called in to safely burn the dynamite.

As a safety precaution after the explosives were discovered, officials say evacuations for neighbors were issued.

The area is near South Central High School. Pitt County Schools spokeswoman Heather Mayo tells WITN that the evacuations did not impact the children leaving that school today, but it did force students who lived in those neighborhoods that were evacuated to remain at school.

Mayo says those students were kept at school until their parents made other arrangements.

Officials say while the townhome complex has a Winterville mailing address, it is located in the city limits of Greenville.
