Firefighters are continuing to let a blaze at a scrap metal recycling facility burn out today, and a highway near the plant reopened.
Highway Patrol officials say U-S Highway 301 near Atlantic Scrap and Processing reopened this morning.
Smithfield officials say two fires broke out yesterday and spread rapidly though the company's inventory of crushed cars.
Smithfield Fire Chief Patrick Harris says the fire is contained to areas that already were burning and that firefighters are letting those areas burn out.
One concern was air quality because the fire spewed thick, black smoke. But Harris says monitors indicate --no-- problems.
He says he expects voluntary water conservation to continue throughout Johnston County.
