A scrap metal fire is spewing a thick
cloud of smoke across Smithfield tonight.
Emergency responders from 15 departments are responding to the
blaze in the small rural town southeast of Raleigh.
Smithfield Mayor Norman Johnson says the fire spread rapidly
through the inventory of crushed cars at Atlantic Scrap &
Processing. The facility had a similar fire in October -- a blaze
that took a full day to contain.
Johnson says the previous fire at Atlantic Scrap didn't cause
any environmental problems.
Jason Barbour, the 911 director for Johnston County says
environmental testers and 15 emergency departments are responding
to the blaze.
