A new study finds a seven-fold increase in these strains in outpatient hospitals between 1999 and 2006.
Experts say doctors and patients often move back and forth between inpatient and outpatient units of a hospital. And once there, MRSA can spread easily, endangering patients with vulnerable immune systems.
An estimated 20,000 people in the US die each year with antibiotic-resistant staph infections.
