The family of a North Carolina-based Marine from Oregon says he was killed by an improvised explosive device in Iraq.
Lance Corporal Dale Peterson was killed in action but family members are still learning details. That's according to his older sister, Melissa Davies.
Peterson was a member of the Second Combat Engineer Battalion of
the Second Marine Division at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville. He joined the Marines after graduating from high school in 2005.
The Department of Defense didn't confirm Peterson's death until
Wednesday, citing a policy of allowing families to grieve privately
for 24 hours before a public announcement.
More than 3,300 U.S. troops have died in Iraq since the war began.
