The family of a man who died after he was unable to have a stem cell transplant says in a lawsuit the death came after Duke University Health System mixed up a blood transfusion.
Gene Edward Harrell arrived at Duke in March 2005 to be treated for cancer. The lawsuit filed last month says Harrell had a severe reaction to a blood transfusion and was unable to have the transplant because of it.
Harrell had non-Hodgkins lymphoma and died in January 2006. Mismatched blood resulted in the transplant of the wrong heart
and lungs into 17-year-old Jessica Santillan four years ago at
