A group in a North Carolina city is continuing its efforts to overturn a state law prohibiting local governments and the state from bargaining with unions.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that the Fayetteville chapter of a statewide coalition called Hear Our Public Employees will sponsor the meeting Thursday at the Cumberland County Headquarters Library. Also sponsoring the meeting is the N.C. Association of Educators.

This summer, local members sought to have the Fayetteville City Council and the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners consider adopting resolutions urging a repeal of the state ban. Neither board considered the resolution.

Only North Carolina and Virginia have laws expressly banning state and local governments from collective bargaining with employees.

Actually ACE, we have to work 30 years before we can retire. Plus, law enforcement officers and firefighters aren't entitled to overtime until they have worked 171 hours in a 28 day work cycle. I see nothing wrong with trying to improve working conditions. As I see it, working conditions have been improved in the private sector. Ace, you aren't earning below minimum wage, are you? Are you being forced to work overtime w/o being compensated? Of course not. So, what is wrong with improving the working conditions for government jobs? Personally, I feel this can be done w/o unions. But your axiom goes for you too, if you don't like your job, find another one.

The NC law that prohibits law enforcement officers and fire fighters from joining unions was declared unconstitutional back in the late 60's. However, it is STILL on the books.

People in the normal work place have to work overtime but they cannot retire with 20 years of service. They have to work on holidays that state employees are off (between holidays and vacation it looks like they work less than 10 months out of 12. As the old saying goes if you don't like your job find another one.
