A state of emergency has been declared by Governor Beverly Perdue in Dare County.

Crews continue to work there as a portion of Highway 12 was washed out late last week when a coastal storm battered our region.

A portion of the highway was open only to vehicles with four wheel drive Tuesday.

That was the case from the Oregon Inlet Bridge to just past the famous serendipity house seen in the movie Nights in Rodanthe just north of the tiny town.

DOT officials say parts of the highway caved in because of overwash due to the remnants of Ida this weekend.

A trail was created so that four wheel drive vehicles could drive in the sand around the damage.

Governor Beverly Perdue says she'll seek federal money to help with the cleanup.

Department of Transportation officials say they'll be working to repair Highway 12 for at least the next few days .

A temporary one lane rock road has now been set up for vehicles without four wheel drive.
