Officials say an unlocked gun on Monday led to the tragic death of a three year-old boy in Onslow County--after the toddler shot himself in the face with his father's gun. That tragedy brings up the issue of gun safety.
Over 500 kids are killed each year due to guns in the home. That startling number led to a study last year conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which found that 1.7 million children across America live in homes with loaded or unlocked guns.
Those statistics are one of the reasons why Buddy Blake of Ayden--is so adamant about spreading the message of gun education. Blake is the father of an 11 year-old and an avid gun collector who teaches a gun safety course once a month.
It is a law in North Carolina that a gun owner must keep their firearm out of reach from minors.

My girls learned to shoot BBs when they were 5-6 yrs old. Graduated to a .22 at about 10-11 yrs old, and with in a couple more years were shooting a .243. They learned their gun safety well and at 40 and 44 still remember that safety comes first. Now I teach my grandchildren when they come for a visit. Gun safety is nothing more than common sense. I know the father of this child has more grief than he can handle, but he does need to be charged. There is no such thing as an accident with a gun, unless the gun malfunctions.
My husband is a deputy and we have guns either locked up or unloaded in our home. Our daughter who is 5 has seen what a gun can do to a deer. I have explained and used this story to reinforce this issue about guns. Sincerely to the family, I am so sorry.
My husband is a cop and he keeps his weapons out of reach of our children. I also carry and mine is always out of reach and if not on my body, then the trigger lock is on. Whether your child is 1 or 18, I do believe children should be taught what guns are and that they are NOT a toy.
