Highway 12 on the Outer Banks soon will be open to regular traffic.
The D.O.T. says one lane will be open for all traffic at 3:00 p.m. at Rodanthe.
The road received substantial damage as a result of last week's coastal storm. Highway crews put in the gravel temporary road that replaces a four-wheel drive lane that was set up Saturday.
The D.O.T. says travelers should be prepared to wait for on-coming traffic, and that the lane may be restricted due to weather, construction or emergency vehicles.

You'll be gone one day too Nick...that's just nature. Does that mean that if something were to happen to you the doctors should just let you go? This place is a rich part of our history and should be embraced by all North Carolinians. It needs to be preserved so that our children can see its beauty and learn from it. There are many other things that our state wastes money on that aren't near as important. You aren't thinking about the people who call the Outer Banks their home either. Do we just forget them too? Quit being so selfish.
Preston, you spoke of my heart in loving the Outer Banks but you also spoke of ignorance and to that I have to respond. The area on highway 12 just north of Rodanthe is now just a thin strip of its' former glory. The state has done everything possible to rebuild the dunes and provide paved thru-way but the surfers have not contributed to this endeavor. The surfers/observers that visit this particular spot care not about the damage to the dunes that they are doing. It is a fragile area yet those folks traverse the dunes (man-made), tearing them down and uprooting the grasses that have been planted there in an attempt to build it back up to help protect the area from storms. I travel there all the time, it provides me with several places of natural beauty and it disheartens me to see those folks that are abusing the area as opposed to helping preserve it.
Just put welfare workers out there with a shovel. It's time for the free ride to end.
