North Carolina officials have closed several roads and ferry routes along the coast due to heavy flooding left by Tropical Storm Ida.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said Friday that high waters and downed trees have caused heavy flooding in coastal counties. At least three ferry routes have been suspended due to unsafe water levels and impassible roads.

Officials say the rising ocean has washed away dunes and carried up to four feet of sand and water to parts of the two-lane N.C. 12 along the Outer Banks, in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk and just north of Rodanthe.

Road closings include a part of N.C. 210 on Topsail Island.

Ida has caused flooding in other coastal areas along the East Coast. It slammed into the Carolinas and Virginia on Thursday.
