Groundbreaking For Kinston Fire Department

It's a five million dollar, sixteen thousand square foot facility. It's a much needed state of the art station, considering the current station on King Street is almost a half a century old. So it’s out with the old and in with the new. Fire station number one will be located on Vernon Avenue, a more heavily populated part of town. After the floods in 1999 and the FEMA flood buyout program that ensured after that, the majority of the area protected by the central fire station was uninhabited. There were no homes, just baron land there, so the station was not effectively serving the citizens. The station is being funded by a nearly five million dollar low interest loan from the U.S.D.A. The facility is expected to be completed in ten months.
