School is back in session in Wake County today, a result of the 2004 law that changed the school calendar.
A local school board member says people expect to have the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Memorial Day and the Monday after Easter as days off. Board member Lori Millberg says there was no way to take all three days off this year because of a late Easter and the state's mandate to start traditional calendar schools no earlier than August 25th.
Easter Monday was a state holiday from 1935 until 1987. It originated with a baseball game between the schools now known as Wake Forest and North Carolina State universities. Lawmakers met just a few blocks away from the game, and they went to the game so often that it was easier to close government for the day.
