Changing local liquor laws continues to be a divisive issue in Eastern Carolina. For proof, look no further than the results of Tuesday's election.

Two counties and two towns held referendums on whether to allow bars and restaurants to sell liquor by the drink. Two passed it, and two shot it down. In some cases, the final vote tally was incredibly close.

Bertie County did not pass the liquor by the drink referendum. It failed by only 13 votes. However, it passed, barely, in Washington County, with 51 percent voting for it, and 49 percent against it. Another close tally from La Grange in Lenoir County, which did not approve the referendum, 53 percent to 47 percent. The most comfortable margin was in the Carteret County town of Newport, which passed the measure with 65 percent of the vote.

If liquor by the drink is not passed, people will go to other counties to participate. Why give other counties the revenue when it can be used in our own? It makes sense to have it passed. And if a person wants to drink, he or she will do so and drive if they please. Get with the program.

This Is ridiculos. What would the point be in preventing this. One mixed drink is equal to one beer, unless a double is ordered. All this is gonna do is cost local restraunts the much needed revenue that is so hard to come by these days.I personally drink mixed drinks and very seldom drink beer and i will choose full service establishment over a beer only everytime.Going out to eat is a treat to my family and is therfore treated that way.No differnt than choosing a motel with or with out a pool.Im sick of big brother making these decisions with out imput from us.Pepole die its a fact of life.If we continue to try and save every life by elimating common sense where are we gonna be then.Just watch the movie idiocricy for some inspiration.
