According to the safe kids coalition, drowning is the number 2 accidental injury related killer of children ages one to 14 across the U.S.

The Onslow County Commissioners have adopted a new ordinance they hope will prevent drownings and injuries.

Starting next November, any outdoor swimming pool, above or in the ground, that contains more than 2 feet of water, must be contained within a fence, or a solid wall that's 4 feet tall.

All fences must have a latch or lock.

Spas and hot tubs must be locked with a safety cover.

I am surprised the new ordinance wasn't put into place YEARS ago! NC needs to catch up with the rest of society.

Onslow County has adopted Appendix G of the 2009 NC Building code (which is the same as the ICC Code). If an above ground pool wall has a solid wall 4' high and a ladder that is removable or lockable it does not need a fence. A spa does not need a fence either. All pools over 2' in depth regardless where purchased or who puts them together are required to have a zoning and building permit. This is for your safety and well being of underground (septic) systems.
