A Greek official says the captain of a cruise ship that sank in the Aegean Sea this week has been charged with negligence.
A number of the captain's passengers were students from North Carolina. Some 22 students from Chapel Hill High School who were aboard the Sea Diamond are expected to return home Saturday night.
In Greece, the merchant Marine Ministry spokeswoman couldn't confirm a report on state television that five other officers have also been charged.
She says the captain was charged with causing a shipwreck through negligence, breaching international shipping safety regulations and polluting the environment. The charges carry a maximum sentence of five years.
Two French passengers are missing after the Sea Diamond hit rocks and foundered Thursday near Santorini island. Nearly 16-hundred others were safely evacuated from the ship. Most of the passengers were American.
