Elizabeth Edwards said yesterday that she feels she let down her family and the country by neglecting to get mammograms that could have caught her cancer earlier.
Mrs. Edwards also urged other women to get their mammograms. Edwards was in Iowa yesterday campaigning with her husband, Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards.
Edwards says she didn't get frequent mammograms after the birth of her final child, Jack. By the time she felt a lump in her breast in 2004, and was able to get it removed, it had grown to nine centimeters and the cancer had spread elsewhere.
Edwards says she is responsible for putting her family at risk. She found out two weeks ago that her cancer had spread to her rib bones. That makes it incurable.
