Dole Food opened its first plant in North Carolina yesterday. The 54 million dollar salad-packaging plant in Bessemer City will employ 350 people.
The company received government incentives worth up to eight-point-five million dollars to open the 285-thousand-square-foot facility west of Charlotte. The area has been hit hard by layoffs in the textile industry.
Dole said the Bessemer City facility could expand to employ up to 900 people over the next ten years.
Murdock has also planned a 350-acre biotechnology research campus in nearby Kannapolis. That facility will conduct research to improve the world's health and well-being.
