A new study finds a growing number of American children end up on food stamps and that the recession is making things even worse.
An analysis of three decades-worth of national data finds that nearly half of all U.S. children will be on food stamps and 90 percent of black children at some point during their childhood.
The report's lead author says. "Your neighbor may be using some of these programs but it's not the kind of thing people want to talk about." Sociologist Mark Rank calls the problem "a real danger sign that we as a society need to do a lot more to protect children."
A Department of Agriculture report released last month says more than 28 million Americans received food stamps in an average month last year, and about half were younger than age 18.
The new analysis is in the November issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

To the person that posted "to Wayne on Nov 3, 2009 at 03:58 PM" : I am very glad to have my job. And let's get something straight...I have gone into work to find my job is no longer on two occasions. I have also gone to work to find that I would be laid off in a short time. Since getting this job, this is the first time in 15 years that I have only had to work ONE job to make ends meet. I lived the life of living beyond my means and paid for it. I have since learned. I don't judge those that NEED the help from these programs. I do have very HARSH feelings and ill will towards those that manipulate the system because they are lazy and worthless who drain the economy while making it harder for those that do NEED the help. Everyone falls on hard time during some portion of their lives. Everyone should help each other as long as they TRY. Sitting on their rears collecting checks isn't TRYING.

Jane, With your working in HS, I can imagine that you have seen many situations. The family that you describe is the very reason that these programs exsist. I support this and understand. I don't mind my taxes going to help people in difficult times. As long as they are trying. EVERYONE needs help at one point or another. Its the leeches that I described that I have a problem with.
