A federal health official says two deaths and 26 other illnesses may be linked to ground beef recalled by a New York meat company because it might have been contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
Lola Scott Russell, a spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says one of the deaths involved a New York adult with several underlying health conditions. The other is a death previously reported by New Hampshire officials. She says all but three of the suspected infections are in the northeastern U.S. and 18 are in New England. The CDC is investigating all the cases.
Ashville, N.Y.-based Fairbank Farms recalled almost 546,000 pounds of ground beef distributed in September to stores in Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The biggest help here would be to by meats and veggies from local producers. Seriously. If ANYTHING is dirty in say, Riverside meats in Trenton, or the LaGrange Butcher shop and the inspector walks in, they're fined out of business. To a large company it's a drop in the bucket. Buy your veggies at the local market when possible and you ensure they're clean and well cooked yourself. And you support local business and the local economy.
LOL Um.. yeah I've known healthy looking vegetarians but they arent vegan... and they have to work very hard at it. The human animal is an omnivore - look at the teeth. I personally only think it's a good idea if there is an individual health reason necessitating that change, but it can be done. Anon 3:35pm, yes absolutely.. and not just spinach, tomatoes, peanuts... E. Coli and Salmonella both can show up in/on a variety of foods. I can remember it happening with strawberries too. The only real answer is buy, prepare, & eat as healthy as you can, take steps for a clean kitchen, say a blessing over your food, and realize that life itself carries risks.
Man-I have had enough of the farmers being allowed to do all of these sick things that lead to others being killed. No more beef for me. I guess I'll be joining the Pitt Co vegetarian group now. I just read the Omnivore's Dilemma and am disgusted by US farm policies.
