House Approves School Calendar Exceptions Bill

The N.C. House approved a bill to broaden exceptions
to North Carolina's rigid public school schedule, voting 76-36 in
favor of a measure that would let the State Board of Education
grant more waivers to entire school districts. The final vote was
postponed from Tuesday and came after dissenting lawmakers tried
again to amend the bill, this time to delay the effective date of
the legislation by one year, until the fall of 2008. The measure
now goes to the Senate, where its prospects are uncertain in part
because chamber leader Marc Basnight likes the current law.
