North Carolina's state retirement system is
seeking nearly 1.4 million dollars from people who
received pension benefits in error upon the death of a relative who
worked in law enforcement.
A House bill filed recently would forgive overpayments ranging
from 51,000 to 295,000 made to nine
widows and one family of deceased government employees. The errors
occurred when the state Law Enforcement Officers' Benefit and
Retirement Fund was rolled into the retirement plan for local
government employees in 1986.
Under current law, the retirement system is required to seek
repayment from the families. A spokeswoman for State Treasurer
Richard Moore says some of the extra money has already been repaid.
