A new park with access to wetlands and winding waterways is set to open in Kitty Hawk this summer, eight years after the land was donated to the town.
It's called Harris Tract Park, and it's described by planning director Joe Heard as a "passive park." The park will have a half-size basketball court, picnic tables, a gazebo, a shuffleboard court and an 18-space parking lot largely confined to one acre.
There also will be a kayak and canoe launch and a quarter-mile boardwalk.
Heard says the project is a scaled-back version of original plans that the town's recreation committee developed. He says bids for those came in at more than twice the amount budgeted. The main difference in the plans is a shortened boardwalk.
