The House Education Committee has approved a bill that could change the cutoff age for children entering kindergarten.
The bill would push back the cutoff birthdate from October 16 to August 31 -- keeping some younger kids out of the classroom.
Representative Dale Folwell says the change would narrow the age
range of children in their first year of public school.
Now, four-year-olds can enter the same class as six-year-olds whose parents decided to delay their entry into kindergarten by a year. That makes for a broad range of maturity and development levels in one classroom.
Only seven states had cutoff entrance dates later than North Carolina.
