Fire Fighters From Ayden, Grifton And Winterville extinguished a potentially dangerous apartment fire at a complex for the elderly.
The call came in around 12:15 Sunday afternoon to dispatchers from residents At Briarcliff Manor in Ayden. Fire officials say flames and heavy smoke engulf one of the eight units in the complex.
The occupant, Alvin Jones, was inside when the fire broke out. Once fire crews arrived on scene, they noticed a sign on the door, stating there were oxygen tanks inside. At that moment the situation became highly dangerous and had rescue officials taking action before the tanks exploded. They were able to get the tanks out of the apartment and no one else was hurt.
Jones was transported to Pitt County Memorial for burns to his face. He is listed in stable condition. The Red Cross was also on scene and will provide housing for Jones and another resident next door, who was displaced because of heavy smoke damage.
