Beginning June 1st, people living on Hatteras Island can't buy or set off fireworks. The fear of brush fires prompted Dare County Commissioners to issue the ban. Residents of the island in southern Dare County had asked the commissioners to ban fireworks because they were concerned about fires on the isolated island that has limited firefighting resources.
