Police learned a federal fugitive was inside a Wilmington business Saturday, and that started a difficult chain of events.
Officers responded to the business at 10th and Chestnut Streets on Saturday morning about 8:30 after learning Eric Miguel Rivers, age 28 of Wilmington, was inside. Rivers was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Services out of Arlington, Virginia for failing to appear in court of federal drug charges.
Police say due to a charity run in the vicinity, there were more people in the area than usual for a Saturday morning. They say officers closed down Brogden Hall at New Hanover High School and diverted runners away from where the suspect was.
Lawmen say the suspect initially refused to come out of the business, but members of the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force / Eastern District persuaded him to cooperate, and he was arrested without further incident.
Rivers is being held without bond as a federal inmate at the New Hanover County correctional facility.
