Authorities say two people in North Carolina were injured after their sports utility vehicle got stuck on the tracks and was hit by a passenger train.

Multiple media outlets reported Saturday that five people were inside the SUV when it got stuck on the tracks in a construction zone in Fayetteville.

Four people had gotten out and were trying to move the vehicle when the Amtrak Train hit it at about 9:30 p.m. Friday.

The train dragged the vehicle about 350 feet down the tracks before stopping.

Authorities say 15-year-old girl still inside the SUV suffered minor injuries.

The teen's mother broke several ribs and was taken to a hospital. No one on the train was injured.

I once saw an interview with an investigator for the NTSB. She talked about what happens when a train hits a car. The analogy she used was that of a car running over an aluminum drink can. She said that pound for pound, mass for mass, that's roughly the equivalent of what happens when a car is hit by a train. Your car: About a ton and some change. A train: Thousands of tons. DUH ! This seems like it would be common sense, but every day,all over the country, this happens because some impatient idiot tries to beat the train. I myself am a lifelong rail fan, and you can bet that I give those metal behemoths the respect that they deserve !
