Search teams today combed rugged mountain terrain for a 12-year-old Boy Scout who vanished on a group hike. About ten scouts and their adult leaders of Troop 230 from Greensboro noticed Michael Auberry was missing after eating lunch together yesterday in Stone Mountain State Park. David Bauer, a ranger with the Blue Ridge Parkway, says Auberry stayed behind with an adult leader while the rest of the troop went for a hike yesterday. The troop members returned and ate lunch with Auberry and the leader. Soon after, they noticed Auberry was
missing from the camp. Searchers late last night found part of Auberry's mess kit less than a mile from the camp. Bauer says the boy might have wandered off to investigate. Search crews included volunteer firefighters, National Park Service staff, and rescue squads from the state park system and Alleghany and Wilkes counties. Stone Mountain State Park, located in Wilkes and Alleghany counties in western North Carolina, covers nearly 14-thousand acres.
