It was a tragic homecoming for an Army medic from Ayden in Pitt County.
On March 5th, 20-year-old Army Specialist Ryan Russell was aiding fellow soldiers injured by a roadside bomb when another bomb exploded, killing Russell and five others.
The rain couldn't deter the hundreds who came to the Ayden cemetery to pay their respects. Russell was raised in Nash County and joined the Army shortly after graduating from Southern Nash High School.
A memorial service honoring Russell will be held at his church in Nashville Sunday. As of Friday afternoon 3,199 American troops have been killed in Iraq.
