A Buncombe County sheriff's deputy was slightly wounded during a standoff last night near Leicaster. Sheriff Van Duncan says the wife of Bill Ray Surrett called for help after her husband allegedly fired at her and missed. Deputies surrounded Surrett's home and a negotiator tried to convince Surrett to surrender. He didn't, and instead ran out of
the home firing a shotgun. A pellet of birdshot hit Lieutenant Dale Denouden, but he wasn't seriously hurt. The sheriff says Surrett was so drunk officials took him to a hospital to sober up before he was taken to jail and charged. Lieutenant Denouden continued working.
