Raleigh Officer Credited for Saving Lives

A Raleigh police officer is credited with saving nine people from a fire early this morning. But one man not discovered until later by firefighters has died. Sergeant M-A McKee smelled smoke while on patrol near downtown. Raleigh and traced it to a three-unit apartment. The officer then knocked on doors and got nine people out of bed and to safety. A television station in Raleigh reports that firefighters found 29-year-old Michael Jameson Gunter, who was pulled from the fire and taken to a hospital where police say he was pronounced dead. Investigators believe the fire started sometime before four a-m in a kitchen area where Gunter was found.
