Pushing For A Sales Tax Increase

Pitt County officials head to Raleigh Wednesday to lobby lawmakers to approve legislation that would allow each county to vote on a local sales tax increase. Pitt County says the money is needed for schools and the community college.
But business owners we talked to feel like raising taxes isn't the solution. As Linda McLawhorn, who works in Southern Charm, an antique shop in downtown Winterville, put it, "We're already taxed to death." Mclawhorn told us that while she supports the school system, in her store the rule of thumb is the more things cost the less customers buy. Meanwhile, school leaders feel this tax is desperately needed to fund new school construction.
