I-26 Open Again In Asheville After Deadly Accident Causes Huge Gas Spill

A Waynesville trucker is dead after the fuel tanker he was driving overturned on Interstate 26 in Asheville and spilled nearly half of its 8,000-gallon load.

The trucker was identified as Steve Pilkington.

I-26 was closed for hours in both directions between the Airport Road and Biltmore Square Mall. It opened late this afternoon.

The state Highway Patrol says the 52-year-old Pilkington was hauling gasoline for Shelton Oil and Transport.

The patrol says there's no sign of what caused the truck to run off the right side of the road shortly after 5 a-m.
