Incumbent New Bern Mayor Tom Bayliss took the top number of votes in Tuesday's election, but not by a big margin.

Challenger Lee Bettis Jr. has asked for a runoff.

To secure a win, a candidate needs 50% of the vote plus one vote.

Bayliss had 49% of the votes. Bettis had 45% of the votes. Votes for Frank Kerr and write-in votes made up 6%.

The top vote-getters for the Alderman seats were: Victor Taylor, Denny Bucher, Johnnie Ray Kinsey, Bernard White, Dana Outlaw and Sabrina Bengel. Several incumbents lost.

Voter turnout ranged from zero percent at the Brices Creek precinct with none of the five registered voters casting ballots to a 41% turnout at the Grantham precinct with 738 out of 1796 registered voters taking part in Tuesday's election.
