Senator Marc Basnight says
construction on a second bridge to link the Outer Banks with the
Currituck County mainland will begin sooner and cost as little as
half of an earlier projected price.
In a letter to a project supporter, Basnight said the estimated
cost of the Mid-Currituck Bridge is 460 million dollars. That's
down from the 822 million dollars that some officials cited
just a month ago.
Backers of the project say the bridge will allow faster
evacuations from the Outer Banks when natural disasters such as
hurricanes strike. The islands are already linked to the mainland
by the Wright Memorial Bridge in southern Currituck County.
Basnight's letter to Gwen Cruickshanks of Point Harbor was
reported Tuesday in The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City.
